Sewing book recommendations?

Hi there,

I've been working on resizing some vintage patterns for a better fit, but I feel that my instincts for doing so are fairly limited. Do any of you have a good book to recommend that would teach me how to properly adjust patterns for fit?

Thanks!
Meghan

Sew U by Wendy Mullin. I got it for Christmas a couple years ago and enjoyed just reading through the whole thing. It focuses on altering patterns to fit you, and includes some basic patterns for pants and a shirt with ideas on how to alter those in various ways to make them your own.

I wrote a post on vintage sewing books. Any of these books would be helpful to you.

Have fun!

Sandra Betzina's Fast Fit and the Fit for Real People by Pati Palmer are very good and you can probably find them at your local library to see if they are helpful to you.

Regarding vintage patterns, Gertie's column at Burdastyle seems quite good.

I second the SewU book, it is superb and with lovely illustrations and free basic patterns.

I also like Fast Fit, but I also always make a muslin for any fitted part - like a bodice. It doesn't add that much time - you're not adding any fasteners or boning or anything like you would to the real garment - and you get a perfect fit. I also like being able to write notes on the muslin and keep it as my pattern.

I would click on to the Nancy's Notions site. She has lots of references and DVDs that are excellent.
