Meghan, your sweater is absolutely beautiful! And to think you totally recycled the fibre from another sweater! That would have been the equivelant of me raising the sheep, sheering them, spinning the wool and then knitting the sweater. Don't think that will be happening anytime soon!
Wow! Absolutely impressed with your entire process of recycling the yarn AND designing this adorable sweater. (I'm e-mailing this sweater pattern to my daughter. I know she would want me to knit a sweater for her just like this.)
what a lovely sweater... I'm more impressed that it's with thrifted yarn... my favorite things to reuse/recycle... and thank you for posting the pattern great job!
Thanks everyone for your lovely comments--unfortunately blogger rarely gives me your email address, so I usually can't respond personally.
ZIINA--very good question about the yarn amount. Unfortunately, I don't have a good scale at home, so I haven't been able to calculate the yardage at this point. May I suggest that you check out similarly gauged short sleeve or mid-length sleeved sweaters for an estimate? Keep in mind that the yoke takes quite a few stitches. AND, if anyone makes this, I would love to get your project details (or post them on ravelry) so we can learn from one another.
wow! that is so great! i love that you recycled the yarn too. Thanks for sharing the pattern! I was going to make the Juliet, but I may make this instead!
I have no way of contacting you, so I hope you'll check back here. I don't have any yarns I can recommend for Shalom, since I only used the recycled yarn. However, I would highly suggest visiting the Shalom Cardigan page on ravelry.com to see what everyone else has been using. I'm sure there will be many varied suggestions. thanks for visiting!
Hi Meghan! Thank you for the pattern, found it just a couple of weeks ago. If you like to see my version please visit my blog: http://nitkutettua.blogspot.com/2008/10/villaa-ja-virtaavaa-vett.html
i knit your pattern and it is so lovable! i am going to put the pictures on my blog. can i translate your pattern in french and share it on my blog too?
Count me in as another person who loves the Shalom sweater! I found the pattern through Ravelry and was so excited to start knitting. However, I'm having trouble with Row 8. I frogged it twice, gave it to my mother (a very experienced knitter) to figure out and she also went through it twice without success. What are we missing? I never seem to have enough stitches at the end. I saw that I'm not the only bonehead to have this issue. If you get a minute, could you email me the answer at casa.vacant@gmail.com? Thank you!
Love this cardigan! Started on it right away but came up short on the stiches just like in the previous comment (row 8). Help please:)- any suggestions for why I'm going astray?
Hi, I've just finished my very own Shalom - it's a lovely pattern :-)}}} I modified it slightly and added long sleeves, just to stay warm in long, cold, Polish winter ;-) And here are some photos: http://herbimania.blogspot.com/2010/02/nareszcie-cos-skonczyam.html Hugs Herbi
This is a gorgeous cardigan, I'd love to make it. Do you know what ply the wool approximates to? (I'm from Australia?) It looks to be about 8 ply but I can't be sure.
Thank you so much for the pattern. I've made one for my granddaughter, and would like to make one for possible sale on my Etsy page, LoveNYarn.Etsy.com, would you permit that? I so enjoyed making it, I would also like to sell one at my church's bazaar (all the money goes to our food pantry in the county). Could you give me permission for these? Mine didn't come out exactly like yours, the ribbing in the yoke looks more like regular ribbing, but it's still pretty, probably because I knit European style.
I'd tried download the pattern, because I'd love to knit one for myself. Unfortunatley the link seems to have broken as it won't let me. The cardigan is beuatiful!
This sweater pattern is so excellent! Thank you for sharing! It is cozy and wonderful. Here's the link to mine: http://craftingmamalibrarian.blogspot.com/2010/02/shalom-cardigan-done.html
Love the Shalom Cardigan! Am currently trying to knit one, but as a newbie am struggling on the M1. I looked up this technique online, but it gave me a million different ways to do it. Can someone describe how to do it? Sorry! Thanks for any help!
hola. esta muy interesante el sueter pero la verdad no comprendo las instrucciones es muy compicado sobre todo porque soy principiante en esto del tejido. si pudieras explicarlo mas claro te lo agradeceria. gracias.
It is an incredibly lovely sweater! I have made one, with the intention of selling it on Etsy, but realized I need permission to do this. I am also actively making one for my daughter-in-law (nearly 6' tall and a Size Large) who fell in love with the smaller version. I used Cascade Yarns 100% Peruvian Wool.
I wanted to check back to say that I did eventually finish my Shalom, shortly after I left the comment about not being able to figure out Row 8. It turns out that if you increase using anything other than the bar method, you'll wind up with the wrong number of stitches; I'm not sure why. I just wanted to leave that information here for anyone else who gets stuck. And I wanted to say that I still love my Shalom and wear it all the time!
Hello Meghan! This Cardigan is so beautiful and I would like to knit it. I have a problem: the size. Is it possible to have explications with other size: 40, 42, 44. Sorry, Y started to knit there a few month and there is a lopt of thing that i don't know how to do. Thank you very much Have a nice afternoon! ps: Sorry my English is old and not perfect!
Dear Meghan, I just finished my first shalom cardigan. If you want to see my version of it (with sleeves) look at http://puppenhandwerk-paersch.jimdo.com/2013/05/02/der-mai-ist-gekommen-meine-strickjacke-ist-fertig/?logout=1. It's a wonderful pattern, thank you for sharing it!
I would love to make this beautiful sweater as a surprise for my daughters birthday but I knit flat on straight needles. I just cannot master circular as I always tuck one needle under my arm. Please could anyone convert the pattern for me. I really really love it. Thank you Meghan
There is no need to convert just use long needles but you will have to use dpn for the sleeves. The circular needle is just for convenience with the number of stitches and ease for trying on while knitting.

Count me in as another person who loves the Shalom sweater! I found the pattern through Ravelry and was so excited to start knitting. However, I'm having trouble with Row 8.
